Contrast and Consensus: A Generational Analysis of Youth in the 1970s

The purpose of this chapter is to present a framework for better understanding the relationship between stages of life-cycle development (such as "youth") and the course of social change as framed by historical periods. We will focus on the construct of "generation" which, we feel, offers a particularly useful means of analyzing the interaction between continuously emerging groups of youth, on the one hand, and the structural changes and historical events which alter the course of societies, on the other.
