Evaluation and Social Justice: Where Are We?

by Ernest R. House 1991

Social justice requires that the interests of all individuals and groups in society be served. Whose interests are served and how interests are registered are critical issues for evaluation studies. Whether the social class structure acts as a major impediment to the fulfillment of interests for large groups of people is an empirical question; I believe the evidence is quite strong that it does and that this topic is avoided in evaluation. In any case, the influence of social class is an important topic for investigation in evaluations of educational programs if we are to improve the way in which evaluation advances social justice.
