Looking Ahead: Issues and Challenges

by Joan Schine 1997

What are the conditions that will make it possible for service learning to become an integral part of schooling in America? What are the impediments? How significant is the debate over mandated versus voluntary service? What is the role of service learning in curriculum reform? The importance of "structured reflection" is stressed repeatedly, but is there a common understanding of the term? These are among the questions that the authors of this Yearbook raise, and that we must continue to consider as we contemplate the problems and possibilities for service learning in the years just ahead.
