Service learning is scarcely a new arrival on the scene, but only lately has it come into its own as a significant element in schooling. As some of the authors of this volume point out, there was a time not long ago when young people—even the very young—were active participants in the household, when the family's work was centered near or in the home, and all members had a contribution to make.
