Pervasive Problems and Issues in Teacher Education

by Kenneth R. Howey & Nancy L. Zimpher - 1999

As earlier chapters have illustrated, teacher education today confronts numerous problems. In this concluding chapter we address those problems that appear not only most troublesome but are also pervasive and persistent. We concentrate on the critical initial phases of teacher education, the cornerstone for what hopefully will become a continuum of professional growth. We focus on initial teacher preparation because we have studied this phenomenon for almost a decade as investigators in the Research About Teacher Education (RATE) study sponsored by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE). From the mid-80s to the mid-90s we annually surveyed faculty and students in programs of teacher education across the United States.
