Social Institutions Serving Adolescents

by Chandra Muller & Michelle Frisco — 1998

In this chapter, we examine two kinds of social institutions that serve adolescents—those targeted at problems such as crime, health, welfare, domestic violence, and sexual abuse, and those designed to enhance adolescents' opportunities for growth and development. We argue that successful programs for youths recognize the multiple problems confronting today's adolescents, seek to provide natural social support, help adolescents develop opportunities, and encourage them to strengthen positive social ties to the family and community.
