To enter this book is like entering a room full of burnished surfaces, with leather-bound books on all the shelves and casement win­dows open to the outside world. This is be­cause the great humanist who wrote it cannot help but communicate his sense of the dignity of our heritage, the spaciousness of our his­tory, the eternal wonder of our arts. Yet he announces at the very start that the miscel­laneous essays included here were all occa­sioned by doubts aroused in him by the turmoil outside. The days of campus unrest brought embarrassing, sometimes outraged questions from his students; and these impelled him, he says, to look again at what he had treasured and taught for so long—to ask what was the use of it all.
