A book on the subject of teacher retirement may seem, on first thought, mundane and unimportant. However, this careful study by Dr. James F. Day, may be most helpful to the educational worker at any level. The author has combined theory and practice in a way which is closely related to the economics of the teaching profession. The study should re­sult in the development of greater under­standing of the current retirement situation in this country, and an appreciation of cer­tain significant changes which need to be made. It is not out of order to use the word "philosophy" in describing Dr. Day's volume. The picture which he paints obvi­ously isn't altogether rosy. That is, in com­parison with their contribution to the general welfare, Day leaves no doubt that he is of the opinion that teachers have been insufficiently regarded in the economic domain. However, he hopes for a kind of William Jamesian "meliorism"—that educators armed with the facts may materially improve their circum­stances. He cites numerous specific examples...
