The book, School, by Burke and Grosvenor, explores how the architecture of a school impacts what takes place within its walls. The book is broken down into four “defining” periods: the late nineteenth century, the early to mid-twentieth century, the mid- to late twentieth century, and the 1990s to the present. Chapter 1, “Beacons of Civilisation,” takes its name from well known quotation spoken by the mythical detective Sherlock Holmes in The Naval Treaty: “Lighthouses my boy! Beacons of the future! Capsules with hundreds of bright little seeds in each, out of which will spring the wiser, better England of the future....” (p. 26). This encapsulates the idealism of those early schools, and the authors describe how that idealism plays out in the design of late nineteenth century schools.
