Books about teacher organizations are rare, which is understandable. Prior to the 1960s, teacher organizations, with a few exceptions, did not play a major role in shaping educational policy at any level of government. A few persons were interested in finding out why they were so ineffective, but most citizens and professional educators could not have cared less about the leadership, structure, policies, and internal dynamics of teacher organizations. With the tremendous increase in the power of teacher organizations in the 1960s, it is inevitable and desirable that more attention be paid to them. Unfortunately, Teachers and Power is about as helpful in understanding the AFT as the Blue Book of the John Birch Society is in understanding the Democratic party. It may not be the most incompetent book about education or labor relations in several years, but it is clearly among the leading contenders. Where it really is in a class by itself, however, is in the degree of malevolence it displays, especially toward AFT... (preview truncated at 150 words.)
