In 1965, the Verbal Interaction Project began as a pilot study with Phyllis Levenstein’s efforts to increase the amount of verbal interaction that occurs between toddlers and low-income mothers. She hypothesized that since children who live in poverty are at risk for later school failure, a low-cost intervention that targets very young children in their homes can affect children’s success in school and also impact parenting skills and self-esteem. More than 40 years have passed since Dr. Levenstein’s pilot study began, but the program continues as the Parent-Child Home Program. In the second edition of Messages from Home, Phyllis and Susan Levenstein provide a detailed description of the program and summarize the research that supports its effectiveness.   In Chapter 1, we’re introduced through case studies to two families who participated in the program.
