The new book, Formative and Design Experiments, by David Reinking and Barbara A. Bradley, is a significant addition to the literature on literacy research, and educational research in general. It is readable, interesting, and gives a passionate (yet informed) argument for the need for educational researchers to strive to develop and refine new research approaches that acknowledge the complexities and the ethical issues associated with conducting investigations in complex educational settings. Formative and design experiments constitute an evolving research approach that acknowledges, and attempts to overcome, some of the limitations of ‘traditional’ methodologies, both quantitative and qualitative, in solving pedagogical problems. This is an approach that is focused on changing and improving pedagogical practices in order to reach specified pedagogical goals or outcomes, and is thus helpful for researchers who are committed to improving educational outcomes for children as opposed to simply engaging in ‘pure’ or ‘basic’ research.
