This book is a pleasure to read. It is provocative, lucid, vivid, and honest. Dr. Greene's objective in this book is to "stimulate the reader to heightened self-consciousness and greater clarity." If that is success, then, for this reader the book is remarkably successful on at least one of the two counts. It stimulates a heightened self-consciousness. About clarity, I have some doubts. The book stems from, as she says, a "type of urban consciousness" to which readers are invited to respond. They are cautioned against simply accepting the "selective vision" that emerges from that urban consciousness. For this rural-minded reader, that is a welcome invitation to respond. Others doubtless will respond differently. The book can be viewed as a collection of essays. Each chapter can stand by itself.
