I had the unsettling experience of reading this highly useful, experientially informed, and theoretically well-grounded book at the same time that I read Taught by America, Sarah Sentilles’ (2005) unflinchingly honest and profoundly important account of the two years she spent teaching and learning in Compton, California (i.e., South Central Los Angeles) with the Teach for America program. The dissonance between the two texts was jarring. One night I would read, “Coaching provides ongoing consistent support for the implementation and instruction components. It is non-threatening and supportive—not evaluative. It gives a sense of how good professional development is” (IRA, 2004, as cited in Rodgers & Rodgers, 2007, p. xviii). The next night—after reading of Sentilles’ early-morning stops at stores where she made photocopies for the day and purchased other basic supplies unavailable at her school; of the leaking, dirt-encrusted, bookless classroom in which she and her 36 first graders spent...
