This instructive and thought-provoking volume focuses on the growth and uses of universities in Latin America and Asia during the 20th century and looks forward to how they may or may not reform, multiply, and contribute to national development in those areas during the new millennium. It poses and in some degree answers such questions as: what are research and world class universities, where are they located now, why are they where they are and not where they aren’t, and what are the prospects for more being created in Asia and Latin America in the future? These two regions of the developing world were chosen for this comparative study because they provide striking contrasts, as co-editors Philip Altbach and Jorge Balán (2007) explain in a separate interview. My main regret is that the authors and editors do not comment more systematically on those contrasts, a point I will return to... (preview truncated at 150 words.)
