Julie McLeod and Lyn Yates take up some expected and familiar adolescent themes in their book, Making Modern Lives: Subjectivity, Schooling and Social Change, but they do so in rather unexpected, enlightening, and exceptional ways. The authors interviewed 26 Australian youths in four different schools over a seven-year period (1993-2000), beginning when the youths were 12 years old, in an effort to understand schooling, social changes, and inequalities. Selecting participants from schools that varied along multiple dimensions (schools serving families with a range of socio-economic backgrounds in small and large urban and suburban areas, with one school also serving surrounding rural towns) allowed them to “compare young people from different backgrounds in the same school and from similar backgrounds in different schools” (p. 10).
