The spring/summer 2006 issue of UrbanEd, the magazine of the University of Southern California’s Rossier School of Education, is devoted to the future of the Ph.D. in education. Various writers throughout the publication report on several trends and challenges concerning doctoral education. In one article, Texas A&M University Distinguished Professor Yvonna S. Lincoln comments on barometers of effectiveness in doctoral education: There are some easy benchmarks. Are your graduates sought after and hired? What are your students doing five years from now, what are they doing ten years from now, what are they doing 15 years from now? Are they making their own way as solid researchers? He is co-author (with Jason Pontius) of Principles for Good Practice in Graduate and Professional Student Engagement. He has presented over 85 sessions at national higher education and student affairs professional conferences, many pertaining to various aspects of doctoral education.

NICHOLS is a Ph.D. Candidate and Doctoral Research Assistant in the Center for the Study of Higher Education at The Pennsylvania State University, where he serves as president of the Higher Education Student Association. He has presented his research at the national conferences of the Association for the Study of Higher Education, the American Educational Research Association, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, and the American College Personnel Association.
