The first was to recount the short history and review the findings of the Surgeon General's inquiry into television violence. The second was to examine how our society links social science research, policy formulation, and social action, using the Surgeon General's investigation as an illustration of the process. The authors accomplished the first objective admirably, but fell short of the second. Their failure in policy analysis is particularly surprising in view of their collective experience in government, foundation work, and journalism at the administrative and policymaking level. Nevertheless, the rushed and superficial analysis in the final pages of this book can hardly stand as an adequate treatment of so important a matter.
As regards their first purpose, Cater and Strickland tell quite a good story that, while occasionally sidetracked with gratuitous bits of information, is well researched and...
