Is it possible to review 581 pages of text, including thirty articles and contributions from thirty-eight authors discussing educational reform in twenty-seven countries, in a short book review? Obviously, the answer is no. The comments that follow will just touch the surface of this International Handbook as a pedagogical and political project. The book is comprised of two main parts, part I entitled "Educational Reform in the 1980s: National Case Studies" and part II entitled "Comparative Issues in Stratification." The editors offer virtually no introduction to the volume. In merely six pages they explain why they have undertaken the editing of this book. Yet they feel they cannot provide an introduction or a synthesis of the chapters because "this would be a prodigious task of questionable value" (p. 2). However, they suggest in their opening sentence that the 1980s witnessed significant educational reform movements in the world, and therefore case-study analyses, such as those provided in this book, are valuable.
