The idea of writing a fieldbook for new principals or aspiring principals in their internships is a very good one, and The New Principal’s Fieldbook fills a substantial gap in the principal preparation literature. After principals have been in the position for a number of years, they tend to get set in their ways. When they are students in a principal preparation program in which their work is in the classroom rather than the field, they lack the pressure of concrete circumstances to put them in a position in which they really need to solve problems. So the time when they are first entering the school as an administrator is a truly teachable moment, when they are looking for solutions to the new problems they encounter.     HAROLD WENGLINSKY is currently Research Manager of the Grow Network, a division of McGraw-Hill. In that capacity, he is conducting large-scale research to help understand how principals can use data to drive decisions and how teachers use data to improve instruction. He worked previously for Educational Testing Service as a Research Scientist and as an Associate Professor of Education at the City University of New York. He obtained his Ph.D. in Sociology from New York University in 1996. He has a book on large-scale assessments of educational technology being released by Teachers College Press in April, and recently had an article in Educational Researcher about principal preparation.
