Work-Readiness Credentials

An alliance of business and labor in New York State has proposed the awarding of a “work readiness” credential to high school students who pass a voluntary test measuring their ability to succeed in entry-level jobs. Concerned that too few high school graduates have developed the skills that employers say are needed for entry-level jobs, backers of the proposal argue that schools, employers, and new labor market entrants will all benefit from a new metric of job readiness that offers more relevant and timely information about the potential of job candidates than does the high school diploma.
