These are vivid tales—tales all too familiar to those of us who work in and with schools. And these are tales that, unfortunately, need to be told again and again. Using notes collected by participant observation, Sussmann offers three case studies of schools in the process of implementing organizational change—either individualized instruction or open classrooms. She studies three different schools: Jackson (predominately black, inner city); Southside (integrated, urban); and Coolidge (white, upper middle class, suburban). Each of the three case studies, which form the bulk of the book, can stand on its own. In the case studies, besides describing the process of implementation, Sussmann assesses the degree of success as measured by movement "toward a structure which resembles the one advocated in the official or influential literature of the innovation they had adopted" (xvi).
