It is not often one finds a book (the author refers to it as a paper) that is simply written and understandable, yet rich in content. Those of us who in the past have accessed the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (NWREL) website and are familiar with the work of Kathleen Cotton would not be surprised that in her typical style, the author has been able to take that large and complex body of literature on principals’ characteristics and student achievement and synthesize it in such a way that it does not lose any of the core substance. Indeed the author has successfully teased out the main findings and presented the supportive evidence in a manner that should engage not only those who are more likely to be the intended audience, but anyone interested in education.   The book is divided into two parts. Part 1, which comprises about two thirds of the book, addresses the research findings on principal behaviors and student achievement, while Part 2... (preview truncated at 150 words.)
