If you want a practical book for building leadership capacity then Lambert's Leadership Capacity for Lasting School Improvement is the one. Each of the ten chapters takes the reader through information and practical exercises to help establish, but more importantly maintain, leadership capacity in schools. These chapters contain help on defining what the ultimate leadership school would be or what Lambert calls a quadrant four school. Lambert defines in detail, with the use of matrices, what leadership is and with the use of descriptions of four quadrants, demonstrates what makes an effective school, which Lambert defines as leadership capacity. The book contains information on the patterns or roles one can take in a school to demonstrate leadership; stresses professional development through coaching, dialogue, and reflection; emphasizes teacher leadership and the changing role of the principal; gives information on students and parent roles; provides suggestions on how to have time for leadership; and gives specific information for district versus school leadership; and most importantly, contains information on sustaining leadership.
