Education Denied: Costs and Remediesreviewed by Carol Huang — 2004 Title: Education Denied: Costs and Remedies Author(s): Katarina Tomasevski Publisher: Zed Books, London ISBN: 1842772503 , Pages: 256, Year: 2003 Search for book at Amazon.com Very few books deal with educational issues on such a grand
scale, and scholars of international law seldom take such a strong
stand to advocate for collective social action; Katarina
Tomasevski’s book Education Denied—Costs and
Remedies stands out on both counts. This book offers a unique
contribution to the global educational debate in its forthright
attempt to steer the current dominant discourse of education policy
driven by economics back to rights-based remedies. This a bold
attempt at a time when education is faced with drastic cuts of
public funding and policy makers are embarking on vast
privatization ventures. The book is a UN Special Report on human
rights in education, an independent and outside report that the
author claims is free from the influence of any international
institutions or intergovernmental decision-making.
The author sees the impact of the denial of education on a
global scale and, in addition to showing the miscalculations and
misrule in education policy, proposes a new way of thinking toward
action.
