An optimist believes that education has the power to change the world, and the authors of Engaging Teachers, Trevor Gale and Kathleen Densmore, are optimistic. They recognize that schooling does not provide answers to the concerns of those in our society who are without power over their lives.  Democracy is the process that can provide a change. “We are particularly concerned with alternatives that offer the possibility of transforming both schools and society in radical democratic directions (p.2).”    Citing a broad array of authors who argue for the merits of the democratic process, the reader is given a clear sense of their commitment to a process approach to education.  Through the processes of an ideal effort to understand democracy and what its potential can be for our society, the authors present an argument that it is only through the use of democratic practices that we can learn to enhance our skills in democracy.  They are clear that the current paternalistic pattern in schools which some might...
