In 1983, the National Commission on Excellence in Education declared that “our nation is at risk.” Twenty years later, we have addressed many of the recommendations put forth by the Commission, leading many educators to declare that education is at risk of trying to provide an education under the assumption that “one size fits all.” Policymakers have discounted the research on multiple intelligences, child development, and best practices (perhaps because they were not “scientifically” based) in favor of an unrealistic and unnecessary expectation that all children must learn all the same material at the same level at the same time at…you get the point. The truth is, as Ohanion (1999) states, “one size fits few.” Like it or not, we are currently teaching and learning in a political, social, and economic climate of standards, testing, and accountability, creating a conundrum for many teachers.
