Lesley Mandel Morrow, author of Organizing & Managing the Language Arts Block takes a collaborative approach to teacher development in creating classrooms that encourage the language and literacy development of young children. She does this by going beyond strategies to "recommendations for scheduling, making transitions, and general organizational models that can assist both pre- and in-service teachers in both teaching and managing the language arts block (LAB) for grades K-4. Morrow challenges the readers and users of this text not just to 'read' the text, but also to 'use' the text as a medium for planning and discussion. She does this by encouraging teachers to meet in study groups or in classroom settings such as grade level meetings to discuss the processes and materials put forth for teachers of grades K-4. As Morrow states, "Participants will read the book, set goals, and report group progress.     Karen Cadiero-Kaplan is an assistant professor at San Diego State University in the Department of Policy Studies in Language and Cross Cultural Education. She received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction jointly at Claremont Graduate University and San Diego State University. She has published articles in professional journals in the areas of critical literacy and critical uses of technology. Currently she is completing a book titled: The Literacy Curriculum and Bilingual Education: A Critical Examination that will be published by Peter Lang later this year.
