Critics of higher education seem to be everywhere. In addition to the occasional media reports regarding the sticker price at a few of our most expensive private institutions, policy analysts, foundation leaders, state leg­islators, and members of the U.S. Congress are making their voices heard regarding what they perceive to be a system of higher education that is heading in the wrong direction. There is a paradox in this current debate. On one hand, American higher education is said to be the envy of the world, attracting many of the best and brightest students from around the globe. On the other hand, the system seems to represent too much of an economic burden for society, given other pressing budgetary concerns. As a result, the line between effectiveness and efficiency is beginning to blur. Annette Kolodny enters the debate in Failing the Future.
