This is Epp and Watkinson's second edited book on educational systemic violence. In their first book, Systemic Violence: How Schools Hurt Children , published in 1996, the contributors investigated a wide spectrum of negative practices in schools, including administrative authoritarianism, discipline, and school norms that exclude and harm students. This latest book is a continuation of their research into school systemic violence, which they define as any institutionalized practices or procedures that adversely impact on individuals or groups by burdening them psychologically, mentally, culturally, spiritually, economically, or physically. It included practices and procedures that prevent students from learning, thus harming them. This may take the form of conventional policies and practices that foster a climate of violence, or policies and practices that appear to be neutral but result in discriminatory effects.
