In 1986, the Division of Educational Psychology of the American Psychological Association approved a proposal from David Berliner and Robert Calfee to write the first Handbook of Educational Psychology. In 1996, the book appeared. Included in the 1,071 pages are thirty-three chapters organized into five parts: “Cognition and Motivation,” “Development and Individual Differences,” “School Curriculum and Psychology,” “Teaching and Instruction,” and “Foundations of the Discipline.” Surveying the table of contents, I found familiar topics and current emphases. The divisions—parts and chapters—made sense to me and seemed to cover the territory well. I had the experience of someone walking into a well-designed living room—of course there should be a sofa here, chairs there. But at one time that room had been empty and neither the choice of furniture nor the arrangement was so obvious.
