Thoughtful teaching is described in this books three parts, "Reflections," "Research," and "Portraits," with a concluding section on how it can be cultivated. By "thoughtful" Clark means both intellectual and moral or "relational," and he seeks to "encourage teachers and teacher-educators to develop in both meanings of the term" (p. xvi). Yet the most interesting feature of the book is a tension between these two as they relate to Clark himself. "Reflections" is partly about the moral dimensions of teaching and partly about the ways in which researchers can contribute to thoughtful teaching. Useful summaries of the process-product research, teacher thinking, and the work on teacher knowledge are provided, though the account of this work stands in contrast to the emphases teachers and children provide on the moral quality of the human relationships between teacher and taught. They will assume that the "intellectual" abilities will be there. So, for Clark, "the essence . . . is a courageous willingness to form moral relationships, to embrace uncertainty, to...
