For a long time our understanding of women reformers of the progressive era has been dominated by Jane Addams. In Addams was personified many, but not all, of the major concerns of the social feminists, and her creation, Hull House, stands as the crowning statement of the promise and limits of progressive urban reform. With A Generation of Women, Ellen Condliffe Lagemann now takes us beyond Addams, exploring the dimensions of social feminism through five New York City-based women—Grace Dodge, Maud Nathan, Lillian Wald, Leonora O'Reilly, and Rose Schneiderman. Each of these women differed, sometimes in striking ways, but each had enough in common so that Lagemann can describe them as a generation that "responded with optimism, vigor, and humanity to the inequities and suffering they found in their society and saw opportunity and challenge in their chance to rebuild the world" (p. 1).
