Economics has long been preoccupied with the nature of production, that is, the transformation of inputs such as land, labor, and capital into outputs of goods and services. The analysis of production has focused primarily on production functions in which the statistical relations between inputs and outputs are estimated. Thus, estimates have been made of how increases in physical capital (tools, factories, equipment, and so on), labor, technology, and other inputs will increase the amount of national output for a country. At the level of an industry, estimates have been made of the statistical relations between specific types of labor and capital inputs on the one hand and outputs of particular goods or services on the other. They have been used most successfully in agriculture, where it has been important to predict crop yields based on the inputs of land, fertilizer, facilities and equipment, labor, and irrigation.
