Until recently, the Left took a highly favorable view of education, not only as an intrinsic good, to be brought within reach of the mass of the people, but also as an instrument of emancipation, an ally in the struggle for freedom and equality. Grounded in the Enlightenment, the socialist creed embodied the rationalist faith in education. In the opening decades of the twentieth century socialists of all persuasions were preoccupied with reforming the class-ridden system of secondary and higher education in Europe by opening it up to all. During the past fifteen years, however, a segment of the Left, including radical revisionist historians and exponents of a "new sociology," have come to see the school primarily as an instrument of social control, irredeemably contaminated by capitalism; Horace Mann and the school teacher have replaced the capitalist and the commissar as symbols of repression.
