The authors inquire just how far the American people have availed themselves of the educational opportunities their society affords. It is to this theme that the discussion addresses itself, by comparing the educational status of the American adult in 1940 with the same factor in 1950 as recorded in the United States Census.

In the course of an investigation of the educational status of the American people as revealed in the 1950 Census it became possible for the authors to secure data with respect to members of the teaching profession as recorded in the occupational inquiries answered by all those in the labor force. Some of these data are presented here.

The job of the chief school officer in any community is twofold. It deals with the school and what goes on within its four walls. It also deals with the community which supports the school and entrusts its children to it. The community is made up not merely of people as people but also of a complex pattern of social units, agencies, organizations, institutions, and informal groups with different backgrounds, with varying and often conflicting objectives and values/and with ideas about education that most of the citizens acquired in their own youth.

The university is also an institution in a given society and culture, inevitably influenced by that society, its values and motivations, and in turn influencing them. Through this interaction the university may and should make its contribution to the society which supports it.

Are more college women marrying nowadays? In what educational groups are divorce, separation, and widowhood most evident? This article attempts to answer these questions so far as Census data permit, with major emphasis on native white females 18 to 64 years of age.

This article indicates a few major generalizations which can be drawn from a census study dealing with the educational attainments of adults classified not only by the rental value of their homes but also by occupation and income.

As a result of the 1940 Census it is now possible to throw some light on the relationship between economic status and the educational attainment of children seven to seventeen years of age. This article summarizes one aspect of these data, which are based on a 5 per cent sample of all non-farm children of the stated ages enumerated in the 1940 Census.

It is the purpose of this article to present an analysis of the migration data by educational status, measured by the years of schooling completed.

The conference group saw not only problems but also opportunities in the present and the immediate future for the worker with adults. They have a more determined and abiding faith in the essence of the American way of life than ever before. They are ready for drastic and fundamental reorganization of existing institutions, to meet the needs that have arisen and will arise, so long as the steps taken conform to the tenets of democracy.

A discussion on how to study a community. Children are influenced by their community in many ways, often subtly. Without a good working knowledge of the community the teacher, whose primary function is dealing with personalities, has no clue as to the effect of the community on the personality of his pupils.

Vocational guidance has reached the rural high school. An increase in the number of schools accepting the guidance function may be as much a reflection of the promotion of the movement by interested institutions and organizations as it is of the need for guidance by the younger of the human resources of the nation. The quality of much of the work in guidance in these rural communities may be open to criticism.
